Forum: GratefulDead Subject: With A Little Help From My (Felt) Forum Friends

Greetings From Sunny Thailand. All is well out here where I am getting ready for the annual winter concert at my school. I wanted to say thanks to all of you who suggested songs for my students to sing last year. I have taught them the songs or we listen to all of your wonderful selections.

This year I am doing something extra. I am putting together a nice power point presentation of some pictures, a lot of the Dead ones you have all shared on here, plus others. Secondly, I am putting together a nice write up on the 60’s music, particularly the psychedelic era. One of the high school students will read this while the slides play. Maybe 3 or 4 minutes.

A Kind Request:
Being a young 31, I do know a lot about the 60’s and I could get a lot of cool stuff from the web too. But, I thought it would be nice to tap into the deep reservoir of musical knowledge that is on this forum. If you would like to help out, please reply to this with some quotes, one liners, cool and deep thoughts or anything that you might think would make this write up very cool and wide. I will compile it, add some of my own stuff and put it out there for you all to enjoy.

If you have any pics that you think would just be perfect for this, please attach them too.

OK, It is 10:00 PM here, I am going downtown to play some Dead Tunes in the sports bar and then at 1:00 AM, going to watch my Cowboys round up some Lions. Yes, I get to watch one game a year, as we do not have school tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for your help on this special project. If you would rather e mail me, I’m always at jopoems (at) hotmail

* Cowboys pulled out a close one at the end, glad I stayed up.

I love Bangkok, the police came to the bar to shut the place down at 3:00 (halftime), so we shut the lights off and all sat on the ground and watched the game. If they came again, all i would have to do is give them 5 bucks (have your ten dollars ready when that bad police man comes...) There is no sound on the TV when the commercials are supposed to be on, so I played a quick tune at ever break -- fun fun fun.

Happy Holidaze! (~);-)

2 of the deepest thoughts from 60s:

1. dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope

2. there´s no hope without dope

Hi Jer

The most significant aspect, in my opinion, of the psychedelic era, apart from the music, poetry, graphics, spirit, was the psychoactives. But I don't know what you could say to your students about that. Acid had an incalculable impact on me in the '60s. Before I grew into my shoes, I was destined for the conveyor belt of life until Alice D. discovered me. I liked the way Robert put it.

'Sitting on a back street many years ago
The tears from your eyes did flow
Feeling out of place inside the time when you were born
No place else to go
Suddenly a rainbow rose
And spread across the land
Hung there while the Beatles sang
I want to hold your hand'

I'm trying to think of some lsd-inspired lyrics (apart from the usual ones) for you to include in your project. Meanwhile perhaps someone else might be able to come up with something appropriate.

Hey Brother, Happy Holidaze!

Thanks for sharing. This is actually for the Middle School and High School Students. So, I can be more open.

Here's the last paragraph so far -- Enjoy!

The sixties will always live on in the songs that were created in a most revolutionary time in world history. In the lyrics of the great Bob Dylan from 1965, “Johnny’s in the basement mixing up the medicine, I’m on the pavement singing about the government.” Or the late great John Lennon from 1967, “All we are saying is give peace a chance” and, “All you need is love…” And finally, From San Francisco’s own, The Grateful Dead -- “Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of true love...”

Peace *

Very happy to help, Jer. You're doin a wonderful job.
Thought I'd add this: Purported to have been written after his first trip.

Help
John Lennon / Paul McCartney

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I've never done before.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh.
